Preds react to Erat request

COLUMBUS, Ohio Recently, the Washington Post reported that Capitals forward — and former Predator — Martin Erat demanded a trade. Sound familiar?

This is because last season, Erat demanded a trade from Nashville to a contender. Though the Caps currently sit in a playoff spot in second place in the Metropolitan Division — and have the league’s reigning Hart Trophy winner in Alex Ovechkin, Erat was clearly unhappy.

He was playing 13:08 per-game with Washington — the lowest since his second year in the NHL.

When asked whether he had heard of a player demanding a trade twice in one calendar year, Nashville coach Barry Trotz said, “No.”

Trotz recalled Erat’s trade request from Nashville — which ended up landing the Predators high-end prospect Filip Forsberg from the Caps last April.

“We expected him to produce, and when he decided he no longer wanted to be a part of the group, we didn’t want him to be a part of the group,” Trotz said. “Marty was a top player for a long time, and I thought he was a Nashville Predator through and through. That threw me off when he did that last year. I have my theories and I’m going to keep them to myself.”

Nashville’s players took a less emotional approach to the Erat news.

“Obviously he wasn’t happy there and didn’t get the chance he thought he was going to get,” forward David Legwand said. “It’s something that just happened. Obviously he’s an older player and went in there and asked for a trade and they’ll try to accommodate that.”

Said captain Shea Weber, “That’s something that’s not within our organization and we’re not too focused on it.”
